A Modern Quilt for the New Year

McCalls M6483
It's been awhile since I purchased this pattern. 2... maybe 3 years. I'm not sure what drew me to it, or why I even bothered. At the time, I wasn't much for quilting anyway. I think i just had a great appreciation for the simplicity of the look, how modern it was. From time to time, I would pull this pattern out, and start to think of ways I could use it. I never got very far though, and never even opened the envelope more or less started cutting out the pattern pieces.

Just a few weeks ago around Christmas time, I thought again about this pattern, that it would look great done in Christmas prints and used for a holiday quilt. It kind of fits the theme I'm going for with our Christmas decor, and the trees could be decorated to be Christmasy.

Fat Quarter Fabric BundleSeemingly unrelated, or so I thought. One day a few months ago, while perusing the pre-cut fabric section at our local fabric store, I came across this really cool fish themed fabric bundle that included five fat quarters. It's not at all the colors or theme I would generally gravitate to, but I still thought it was really cool, and I couldn't leave the store without them. My husband is a fly fisherman, and I thought I could definitely find some type of project to use this for.  As the weeks went on, I found myself more and more drawn to the fish bundle, and started to collect fat quarters to coordinate with it.

Then, as luck would have it, last night I started thinking about making a quilt for our living room. We are in the midst of re-furnishing and re-decorating. One of the things I have insisted on having built to put in there was a blanket ladder to hold some throw blankets and quilts. The only thing is...we don't have any quilts to match the color scheme we picked for that room.. I checked Craftsy for quilting patterns, and found a few I sort of liked, but none that just "fit", so I started searching around the web. There are some really stinkin' cute quilts and some equally cute quilting patterns. None, were "the one" though. Then, I remembered I had this pattern in a basket in the hall closet. Aha! and, conveniently I had the fish fabric and it's coordinating fat quarter friends. All of which just harmoniously fit together, solving my dilemma. The colors aren't an exact match to the ones we've picked for our new living room, but they're really close, and I think it'll be a great fit.

Isn't it wonderful when things just come together?
